ASTER TIR Recalibration

Last Updated: 06 December 2023

Radiometric calibration coefficient (RCC) versions 1.x and 2.x used for ASTER Thermal Infrared (TIR) products processed before 8 February 2006 include an error caused from delay in RCC updating. This error has been reduced for RCC version 2.09 or later, applied to products observed after October 2002, but is large in earlier RCC versions, particularly versions 2.05 and 2.06 applied to products observed from February 2001 to October 2002, although the error depends on a scene observation date. Recent products processed on or after 8 February 2006 have been calibrated by RCC versions 3.x/4.x which are regressively calculated on a day-by-day basis by Sakuma's method (2005). Thus, RCC versions 3.x/4.x are basically accurate enough, but still include some errors dependent on a scene observation date, particularly products observed around late June and early July in 2006 may have a not-small error.

This page will give recalibration coefficients which you can apply to your products (Levels 1A, 1B, 3A, and 1T). The coefficients are generated by a modified version of Tonooka's method (2003). This page will also provide estimated calibration errors on your products.

STEP 1: Select the observation date (UTC) of your product

Year: Month: Day:

Because recalibration needs onboard calibration (OBC) data, recent products observed after the latest OBC date registered in this system are not supported at present (they will be supported in the future).

STEP 2: Select the RCC version number of your product

RCC Version:

You can find the RCC version number in the product metadata included in the HDF file (Object name is "RADIOMETRICDBVERSION"). RCC versions for recent products processed on or after 8 February 2006 will be 3.x or 4.x.

STEP 3: Push the submit button, and you can get recalibration coefficients for your product
